What size excavator do I need for a mulching head?
Heads are offered across roughly 5-15 t, 7-15 t, 12-20 t and 15-45 t brackets in the ranges sold locally, with flow requirements from about 45 L/min up to nearly 400 L/min. But the bracket is only a starting point — confirm the carrier sustains the required flow continuously at working pressure, and that cooling holds up at 35-40°C ambient over a full shift.
Is maximum tree diameter a useful way to compare mulchers?
No. A brochure stating 300 mm maximum does not mean the machine will economically process a forest of 300 mm stems. Production depends on stem density, average diameter, species, moisture, branch structure, rocks, terrain, desired finish, number of passes and operator. Request a demonstration in representative vegetation and measure hectares per hour.
Carbide teeth or knives — which should I use?
Carbide fixed teeth resist impact and wear well in difficult and rocky conditions, but cost more and can produce a rougher finish. Knife-type tools cut more cleanly and efficiently with potentially lower power demand, but are vulnerable to rock and need sharpening or replacement. Tractor, skid steer, excavator or dedicated carrier?
Tractor PTO suits large accessible areas, plantation maintenance, firebreaks and agricultural reclamation. Skid steers and compact track loaders suit smaller blocks, roadsides, utilities and council work. Excavators suit roadside vegetation, waterways, steep banks and selective clearing where reach matters. Dedicated carriers suit continuous professional mulching at high annual hectares. Match the carrier to the sites the contract contains, not to hectares per day on ideal ground.
Why does my mulcher stall or lose rotor speed?
Usually because the head is drawing more than the carrier can sustain — a match made on peak flow rather than continuous flow. Bite-limiting rotors control engagement depth and reduce peak load, fewer rotor stalls and better speed recovery, and both FAE and Fecon market optimisation systems intended to keep head demand matched to carrier output.
Should I hire or buy a mulching head?
Hire first if utilisation is uncertain. Dry hire lets you win the project, measure actual hectares per hour, litres per hectare and tooth wear per hectare, establish annual demand, and purchase only once utilisation is demonstrated. At high, proven utilisation ownership is cheaper — but proving it first costs very little.
What should I inspect on a used mulching head?
Rotor balance, tooth holders, missing teeth, rotor bearings, belt condition, gearbox, hydraulic motor, door, liners, counter knives and frame welds. Rock damage deserves particular attention: a replacement rotor can destroy the economics of an apparently cheap purchase.
