In plantation re-establishment the standard sequence is stump treatment, then slash treatment with a mulcher, then tillage or mounding, then planting. Skipping the tillage stage because the site looks clear after mulching is a common and expensive misreading.

The specification that resolves it is the establishment requirement. If it mentions planting, compaction relief or root systems, a mulcher alone will not meet it.

A mulcher works above the ground

It reduces standing and fallen vegetation to mulch, left on the surface. Ground contact is something to minimise, because soil is far harder on tooling than wood is, and the treatment standard is usually about what remains above the surface rather than below it.

Reach over drains and banks is the requirement, the material stays on the surface, and nothing needs to happen below ground.

Mulch the slash, then till to destroy roots, break harvesting compaction and prepare a plantable profile. Treating them as alternatives produces a site that looks prepared and plants badly.

Combining mulching, tilling and rock crushing avoids three mobilisations. It is less productive at any single function, which is an acceptable trade when finish quality matters more than throughput.

The arithmetic

What rock does to a tilling rate

  1. 1A tiller quoted at 0.6 hectares per hour, with machine cost at $350 per hour, prices at roughly $583 per hectare before consumables.
  2. 2On clean ground, tooling might run to a modest allowance per hectare and the rate holds.
  3. 3On ground with significant rock, two things happen at once: tool and holder replacement rises sharply, and the achievable rate falls as the operator works more carefully and stops more often.
  4. 4At 0.35 hectares per hour, the same $350 machine cost alone is $1,000 per hectare — before the increased consumable spend is added on top.

The rate nearly doubles from the machine cost alone, and the consumable increase is additional. A quote built on clean-ground assumptions has no margin left at all.

This is why surveying representative ground before pricing is standard among contractors who hold their rates, and why a mulcher — working above the soil where the specification allows — carries a fundamentally more predictable consumable cost than a tiller does.

Read the silvicultural prescription, not the site

The prescription belongs to the client and the ground. If it calls for incorporating slash and preparing a planting medium, a tiller is the tool; if it stops at reducing standing vegetation, a mulcher is. This settles most cases outright.

Survey rock content before pricing anything

Rock drives tooth and tool-holder replacement while simultaneously reducing hectares per day, so cost per hectare is hit from both directions. It is invisible in imagery and usually absent from tender documents.

Count the working days in the window

Establishment work is bounded by a planting window that does not move. Capacity above what the window can absorb earns nothing, and a machine arriving after it closes has no commercial value at all.

Check the carrier can sustain the duty

Both are continuous loads. Confirm continuous flow, working pressure at that flow, and cooling at the ambient temperatures you actually work in — a head on a marginal circuit overheats rather than simply working more slowly.

Decide own versus hire on campaign frequency

An implement used in a single annual campaign carries twelve months of fixed cost against a few weeks of revenue. Where the carrier earns in another season, that changes; where it does not, hire usually wins.

Two passes with one machine

On some sites the sequence is mulch first, then cultivate — and where the second operation is occasional, hiring or subcontracting it beats owning a second implement. Establish what the silvicultural prescription actually requires before assuming one machine has to do both, because a multifunction unit is a compromise at each task and earns only where all its functions are genuinely needed.

Can a mulcher replace a tiller for site preparation?

Only where the specification does not require anything below ground. Mulching leaves root systems intact and does not relieve harvesting compaction, so a site prepared by mulching alone will generally not meet a planting specification.

Which costs more per hectare?

It depends on the site rather than the machine. Mulching cost is driven by vegetation density; tilling by depth, rock content and passes. On a dense site with little rock, mulching may be the more expensive stage; on a rocky site at depth, tilling usually is.

Is a multifunction machine worth it?

On reclamation sites containing vegetation, stumps, roots and rock together, frequently yes — it avoids running three machines over the same ground. On sites needing only one function, a dedicated head will be more productive and cheaper to run.
