Forestry Mulching Costs in Australia: What Drives the Price per Hectare

Forestry mulching is priced per hectare and costed per hour, and the gap between those two is where the money is made or lost. Cost per hectare is set by vegetation density, not by area.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. At a machine cost of $350 per hour, production of 0.75 hectares per hour gives $466.67 per hectare. The same machine in dense vegetation at 0.35 hectares per hour gives $1,000 per hectare — a 114 per cent increase with no change in the hourly cost at all.

That is why any quote produced from satellite imagery or total hectares alone is a guess. Density has to be assessed on the ground, against a defined treatment standard.

How mulching is actually priced

Three pricing structures dominate Australian mulching work, and they transfer risk very differently.

Per hectare is the most common and the most dangerous for the contractor, because the contractor carries all the density risk. It suits work where vegetation is uniform and has been inspected.

Hourly or day rate transfers density risk to the client. It suits variable vegetation, unknown sites and situations where the treatment standard is loosely defined — but clients resist it because their cost is uncapped.

Per hectare with a density band splits the difference: a rate per hectare within a defined stem density and diameter range, with a variation mechanism outside it. This is the structure that protects both sides, and it is under-used.

What actually drives mulching cost

Machine cost per hour is the easy half — it is depreciation, finance, insurance, fuel, operator, service, repairs and consumables, and it can be calculated precisely. Production per hour is the hard half, and it moves far more.

Building a defensible rate from your own numbers

The only reliable rate is the one you build. The sequence is short, and it is the same whether you are quoting a hectare of firebreak or a hundred hectares of solar site preparation.

  • Calculate your true machine cost per hour: depreciation, finance, insurance, fuel, operator, service, repairs, teeth and consumables
  • Measure hectares per hour in vegetation genuinely comparable to the site, not in a demonstration paddock
  • Divide machine cost per hour by hectares per hour to get your cost per hectare
  • Add mobilisation, travel between work fronts and any traffic management as separate line items
  • Add site-specific risk: rock, access, second-pass probability, weather exposure
  • Apply your margin to the total, not to the machine cost alone

If you are receiving mulching quotes

A landholder, council or developer comparing quotes is usually comparing different assumptions rather than different prices. Three quotes that look 40 per cent apart frequently reflect three different readings of the same site.

  • Ask what treatment standard each quote is priced against — a fuel-reduction standard and a 'clear it' instruction are different jobs
  • Ask whether the price assumes one pass or two
  • Ask what stem density and maximum diameter the rate assumes, and what happens outside that band
  • Ask whether mobilisation is included, and how many mobilisations the programme assumes
  • Ask what happens if rock is encountered
  • Confirm insurance, and whether the contractor is working near assets requiring specific competency
  • Be suspicious of a quote produced without a site visit
