The commercial argument for an excavator-mounted head is utilisation. The carrier can return to earthmoving, clearing or log handling when harvesting work is thin, which spreads its fixed cost across more of the year than a purpose-built harvester achieves.

The trade is production: a purpose-built harvester with a matched carrier will out-produce an excavator conversion on sustained work. Where harvesting hours are high enough to justify a dedicated machine, the conversion stops being the better economics.

Consumables and calibration behave as they do on any head — consumed per cubic metre and sensitive to species and technique. In eucalyptus specifically, expect faster consumption than softwood-derived figures suggest.

Verify the carrier beyond its weight class

Common questions about this machine

Is an excavator with a harvesting head a substitute for a purpose-built harvester?

Commercially, where harvesting hours are too low to justify a dedicated machine — the carrier earns elsewhere the rest of the year, which a harvester cannot. Operationally it is not equivalent: a purpose-built harvester will out-produce it on sustained work through better control integration, cab ergonomics and duty capability. The decision follows annual harvesting hours more than it follows the machines.

What does the eucalyptus roller configuration change?

How the head grips and debarks hardwood stems. Eucalypt bark is tenacious and usually has to be removed to a mill specification, and roller pattern and geometry are what determine whether that happens at production speed. A softwood configuration will hold the stem and fail the specification, which means discounted or rejected loads rather than merely slower work.

How much hydraulic headroom should I leave above the minimum flow?

Enough that the head reaches published performance in field conditions rather than only at the top of the carrier's capability. A carrier that just reaches 200 litres per minute continuously will run the head below its potential and work the circuit harder doing it. Specify toward the upper half of the 200-330 range where the carrier allows.
