Not the worst coupe and not the best. The proportion of genuinely difficult ground is what decides whether tracked capability is carried usefully or carried everywhere for occasional use.

Tracked machines cost more to move and travel more slowly between work points. On scattered coupes, mobilisation can consume more days than breakdowns.

Include undercarriage in the cost model

It is among the largest single maintenance costs on a tracked machine, it is driven by travel as much as by work, and it is measurable rather than a matter of judgement.

Check the resale market you would be selling into

Configuration affects the buyer pool. A machine specified for terrain your region does not have is harder to sell there, and depreciation is the largest number in the model.

Wheeled, plus assistance where the ground demands it

The comparison assumes one machine has to cover the whole programme. Where only a minority of coupes are genuinely difficult, a wheeled machine with winch assistance on the ground that needs it can cover the range at lower transport and undercarriage cost than a tracked machine carried everywhere for occasional use. It adds a second asset and a setup step, so it earns where the difficult proportion is real but small.

Which is cheaper to run?

It depends on the ground. Wheeled machines avoid undercarriage cost but consume tyres and lose operating days in wet conditions. Tracked machines carry undercarriage cost but work more of the year on soft ground. Model the total against your actual conditions rather than comparing wear items in isolation.

Can a wheeled feller buncher work on slopes?

Within limits that are considerably tighter than a tracked machine's, and the limits are safety-critical rather than merely productivity ones. On genuinely steep ground, tracked machines and in some cases winch assistance are the appropriate answer.

Does configuration affect transport cost?

Yes. A tracked machine in the 36-tonne class with a head fitted frequently exceeds standard dimensions, adding permit and escort cost on every relocation. For an operation moving frequently between small blocks, that recurring cost can outweigh the on-site productivity difference.
